Mineral Makeup Ingredients: Good Stuff Inside

By Marilyn Etzel

Why is mineral makeup all the rage? The ingredients in mineral cosmetics provide a sheer look to the skin that is not heavy like your auntie's old makeup. Some mineral makeup contains natural and not so natural ingredients.

Natural is a relative term. For mineral makeup, it means that the minerals came from the earth. Some mineral cosmetics have these natural ingredients plus a few extras used as fillers and preservatives. They are not necessarily harmful, but the choice is yours as to what your makeup can contain.

The premise of mineral makeup is that it is all natural. In order to be all natural, the ingredients have to be wholesome and not harmful to your skin. If your mineral makeup contains ingredients like this, you are in for clean healthy skin under your makeup.

1. Mica - Mica is found in just about all mineral cosmetics. Even though mineral makeup is fine powder, it still needs to adhere to your face instead of your clothes when you are applying it. That's where mica comes in. the properties of this mineral aid in the adherence of the makeup as well as reflecting light to reduce large pores, fine lines and wrinkles. Serecite mica is the type of this mineral most commonly used.

2. Titanium Dioxide - Do you have skin imperfections that you want to hide? You'll be glad that your mineral cosmetics contain titanium dioxide. This mineral provides a natural matte finish to your skin and also brighteners to simulate the natural glow of healthy skin. As with mica, titanium dioxide reflects light to conceal large pores and fine lines. You will gain sun protection with this mineral that is also found in commercial sunscreen products. For extra coverage, apply sunscreen to your skin before your makeup.

3. Zinc Oxide - This is the mineral that makes up the warrior stripes on the faces of surfers and other beach goers in the summer time. Zinc oxide stays on even when it gets wet to continue to protect your skin. The mineral zinc is also found in homeopathic medicines and is a natural healing agent for the body.

4. Iron Oxide - There's nothing wrong with a splash of color to make a women noticeable in a crowd. Iron oxides add color to mineral makeup naturally. The pigments come in several shades useful for eye shadows and blushes. More subtle pigments are used to match foundations to all skin tones.

5. Silica - this mineral when powdered, adds a silky feel to mineral makeup. It functions to absorb excess oil in the skin so makeup continues to appear natural and not cakey. Silica powder also helps to reduce fine lines and reduce pores.

6. Boron Nitride - Another natural mineral that absorbs excess oil similar to silica. It smoothes the skin and provides a natural look like mica and silica. Women would rather have a glow than a shine and boron nitride helps mineral makeup to accomplish this.

To be natural, mineral makeup must contain natural ingredients like the minerals named above. Other products like kaolin clay or rice powder are added also. Whether you choose to use these ingredients is up to you.

Choose carefully depending on your skin issues and choices for ingredients. Try more than one kind and compare. - 20611
